The Best Sod You Can Buy

There is a reason our sod establishes faster than the pallets you find at a big-box lot. We grow five to six certified varieties of Kentucky Bluegrass with a little Perennial Rye, chosen off university turf trials for color, root strength, and drought resistance - then we leave it in the field a full 18 months to mature. By the time it reaches your home, a sports field, or a golf course, the hard part is already done.

Grass Varieties

We choose our seed from the latest, strongest genetic varieties available. We mix five to six certified varieties of Kentucky Blue Grass and a small percentage of Perennial Rye. The criteria we use to determine which varieties we plant are;

  • Dark Green Color
  • Root Strength
  • Disease and Insect Resistance
  • Longevity
  • Sun Tolerance
  • Shade Tolerance
  • Drought Resistance
  • Grass Durability

We use University Means Tests which compare grass varieties using these criteria.

Grass Maturity

We allow our grass to mature in our fields for at least 18 months. When you receive your sod with this maturity, the more healthy and trouble-free your lawn will be.

Drought Tolerant

We plant Blue Grass Sod varieties because they could resist, overall, the negative effects of drought, sports, high traffic, and poor management more than any other type of grass, in this climate. Some types of grass need a little less water to maintain. However, these grass strains tend to not resist wear, disease, or drought as well as Blue Grass. They die easily and usually need to be replaced often. They may not withstand the riggers of normal use, either in a residential or commercial application. When drought problems become severe enough, or the water is shut off during extremely hot temperatures, most other varieties will die. But, Blue Grass not only resists wear and continual use, but it will also green up as soon as the water is reapplied.

DO YOU NEED SOD IN UTAH?

We are a family-owned sod farm under Heglar Creek Farms, and we have been growing Kentucky Bluegrass in the Raft River Valley for decades. That is longer than most Utah lawns have been alive. Everything we sell is cut fresh the day it ships and delivered straight to your yard across Utah and Southern Idaho.

Here is what actually makes our sod different. We let it mature in the field for at least 18 months before it ever reaches you, so the root system is already strong when it lands in your yard. And our drought-tolerant Blue Grass blend is bred to hold its color through Utah heat and bounce back fast after a dry spell - which matters more every year the state tightens its water rules.

People ask us if new sod is the responsible choice during a drought. Fair question. A mature Bluegrass lawn uses water efficiently once it is established, cools the ground around your home, and holds up to kids, dogs, and foot traffic in a way gravel and rock never will. We would rather help you put in a lawn that lasts than sell you one that dies in two summers.
